A type of device in the material handling business which can be used to lift and transport loads from one place to another is referred to as a forklift. Each component of a forklift has a particular function. Different parts can be used to move the load either vertically or horizontally.

Mast
The forklift mast refers to all the components which lower and lift the load. There are different kinds of masts used for raising loads to various heights: simplex, duplex, triplex and quad.

Power Supply
Forklifts have four different ways of being powered: electric, gas, diesel and propane. The battery is situated inside the cab beneath the seat. The propane tank is on the back of the truck. The fuel tank on diesel and gas forklifts is under the rear of the truck.

Cab
Positioned within the center of the truck is the forklift cab. This is where the operator sits and accesses all the controls and informational gauges. The steering wheel, gas pedal, brake, lifting controls and tilting controls are all located within the cab.

Frame
Carrying all the biggest forklift parts is the frame of the truck. This includes the counterweights located at the rear that prevents the truck from tipping over when loaded. The frame includes the overhead guard that protects the operator. The undercarriage holds the driveshaft, axles and wheels.
